Travelling progressively becomes increasingly accessible yearly; more so especially with the availability of budget airlines everywhere. And though it may seem like all your friends are constantly globetrotting, a new study by Expedia.com.my has unveiled a surprising finding – Malaysia is the third most vacation deprived nation in the world.
The 2017 Expedia Vacation Deprivation® Study takes into account the vacation habits of over 15,000 employees across 30 countries globally and according to the study, nearly two third of Malaysians have described themselves as vacation deprived.
That’s not all. 52% of Malaysian employees reported that they have cancelled vacations due to work, and only 37% took all their entitled annual leaves in 2017, citing reasons like affordability issues (35%), desire to save up the days for a longer holiday (31%), and the unavailability to get away from work (26%).
The study also discovered that 53% of full-time adult employees have been vacation deprived in 2017, and that South Korea shockingly leads the pack as the most vacation deprived country in the world with a whopping 81% of them feeling deprived of vacations.
Meanwhile, over 35% of Malaysians check work-related messages daily while on vacation, although 72% agreed that it is their right to go on vacation without feeling guilty. Additionally, 77% of Malaysians agreed that they become more relaxed after a vacation, and 49% agreed that vacations are paramount for their general health and well-being.
Taking time off from work has been proven to do wonders for the soul, mentally, emotionally and physically, on top of enhancing health, creativity, productivity and relationships. We’re big believers in travelling, and as you may already know – No one regrets taking a vacation.
