When we think of stretch marks, scars, freckles, and bruises amongst other things that define our flaws, the imperfections often leave us insecure. But really, the best way to go about it is to embrace these little quirks, and the artwork of British embroidery artist Sally Hewett really shows us exactly how to.

Sally brings to life the body parts and the details of these body flaws through her three dimensional artworks. Using the simplest materials like thread, padding, foam, fabric and quilting hoops, the empowering artist sends a n important message through her art, presenting a collection of embroidered surgical scars, discolouration, body hair, cellulite and more.

Meaning to spread a strong message, Sally wrote in her website, “It is not the conventionally beautiful bodies that take my eye,” encouraging self-love, adding,”It is bodies which show their history, that have been altered by their experiences, that are decorated with bruises, scars, spots, stretch marks, freckles, pigmentation, veins.”

Sally focuses on bodies that have undergone changes from disease and surgery, paying tribute to her grandmother who had her breast removed due to cancer. Like Sally, her grandmother surely is comfortable with her flaws as according to Sally, “She was almost equally appreciative of what a beautiful stitching job he had done. She was very proud of her scar.”
