Your typical boy bands with pretty boys and macho men have apparently became yesterday’s story. China’s latest ‘boy band’ FCC-Acrush that has got millions fan-girling over is made up of no less good-looking and talented members, but one thing’s different – the ‘boys’ are actually all females.
The Acrush girls are all tomboy-styled in short hair and dapper-looking clothing, and they are aged between 18 to 24. The peculiar moniker FCC-Acrush on the other hand stands for this – FFC is associated with Fantasy Football Confederation whereas the “A” in Acrush actually is attributed to the Greek god Adonis who signifies male beauty.
Utilising the power of the internet, Acrush had already built a name for itself even before the band’s official debut, and the band had even garnered over 750,000 followers on Weibo, way before releasing their first music video in April this year.
It goes without saying that the Chinese girl group had faced lots of backlash, especially for those who are more old-fashioned and conservative.
“There’s prejudice, and some people think because of their style then they are homosexual, and use that to criticise the band,” revealed a spokesperson of the band’s entertainment company, Wang Tianhai.
Clarifying that the formation of the band left no intention of promoting a political message, Wang commented, “They just enjoy the male appearance, the carefree style and want to sing like men.” He added, “We’re just tapping into the unique beauty of gender neutral,” giving his full support to Acrush.
To protect the band members, the company even went as far as to forbid the girls of Acrush to discuss their sexuality. After all, it is their music that matters at the end of the day, right?
