The 2017 Miss World beauty pageant in China is the 5th Miss World event to be held in China in 10 years. Previously, the competition was held in Sanya. There was also a controversy with Miss Canada, Anastasia Lin, as officials in Hong Kong stopped her from boarding a plane bound for China’s Hainan Island. Just last year, Lin was reportedly told to not speak about human rights abuses in China by pageant authorities.
She did not compete in this year’s event, with Canada represented by high school student Cynthia Menard.
