Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) is back with fresh insights, adding new Malay words and definitions in the dictionary to keep up with our crazy, crazy times.

This year, the Malay Literary Reference Centre has expanded its vocabulary list with new millennial/meme-related words including photobomb, killfie, nap as well as pick-up line. Woah.

According to DBP, the authorised malay word for ‘killfie’ is swafoto maut, which means snapping a photo using a smartphone or digital camera in a dangerous space that could lead to death.

To be honest, we didn’t even know ‘killfie’ is an actual term now, but it makes sense. However, we must note that ‘killfie’ has yet to be added as an official English vocabulary.

Meanwhile, the legit Malay word for ‘photobomb’ is tunafoto. Meowth, that’s right — isn’t tuna fish? We were as confused as you too, but apparently, tuna (malay) is a prefix word which means: broken, lack or none.

As can be seen from the picture below, tuna is usually used to act as the word non (i.e. tunabusana = no clothes) , so tunafoto simply means broken photo/no photo.

On the other hand, ‘nap’ is known as meridap (???) in Malay while ‘pick-up line’ is kata pikat.
