Uploaded to YouTube on Monday by filmmakers Beth David and Esteban Bravo, In a Heartbeat is a charming tale of teenage love that has quickly gone viral. Animated movies can often tell stories in a way that live-action movies cannot, so here’s a fair warning: You may need a tissue or two to watch this touching and delightful short film.
The animated short film, which was initially produced as a senior thesis project at Ringling College of Art and Design, follows a young man who fears being outed when his heart takes matters into its own hands and pops out of his chest to chase after his crush.

Feeling akin to the Disney Animation Studios’ romantic short Paperman, the short film crafts palpable yearning and a sweetly satisfying conclusion in its brief (and silent, besides music) four minutes. The project is buoyed by a charming score from Arturo Cardelús and sound design by Nick Ainsworth.
With its tale of an LGBT crush, the film does much for inclusion, an area where major studios, and particularly animated films, often fall short. Its inclusivity and sweet tone instantly resonated with viewers, prompting positive responses on social media.
