Armed with witty song titles and their dreamy ambient-pop sounds, Los Angeles, California three-piece band LANY has made great strides since coming together in 2014 and sharing their music online. Paul Klein, Jake Goss and Les Priest has since toured over a 100 shows worldwide and have even opened for notable artistes such as X Ambassadors, Halsey and John Mayer.
LANY is quickly growing onward and upward with its substantially escalating fan base by fusing their distinct flavour into the alternative rock scene with tracks like “ILYSB”, “4EVER!”, “Super Far”, “13”, all included in the band’s first studio album, LANY, newly released on June 30th this year. With over 6.9 million monthly listeners worldwide on Spotify, the band was even crowned the most streamed artist in 2016 via Spotify Discover.
We quizzed drummer Jake Goss on LANY’s beginnings, his most memorable gig thus far and the future of the band, ahead of their first ever Malaysian gig at the 2017 Good Vibes Festival, happening August 12 to 13 at The Ranch, Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands.
Q: Tell us about the band’s humble beginnings and what the dynamics of the band is like.
A: The band originally started in Nashville after Paul called me to see if he could come in town and make music with Les and I. Obviously I said, “Yes please, immediately.” This became LANY.
Les and I moved to Los Angeles after we were getting serious interest from labels after putting some songs on Soundcloud. Once we were all set and living in a one-bedroom apartment in Hollywood we hustled, saying yes to every opportunity that came our way and buckling down on a live set. Our manager Rupert got us into the right rooms with the right people and we’ve been non-stop ever since.
Q: Why LANY?
A: Los Angeles – New York, and we needed a four-letter word.
Q: You’re no stranger to touring, even with other artistes. What has been the most memorable gig you’ve played?
A: The seven nights we got to open for John Mayer! I’m still reeling from it.
Q: If you could, do detail the highlight your musical career thus far.
A: Recording and releasing our full length debut album. Feels like we’re finally shaking hands with the world.
Q: How do you think the band has evolved, from 2014 up until today?
A: We have more confidence, more heart, more drive, more meaning, more purpose, more ambition, more challenges, more movement, more everything.
Q: How has your success altered the way you engage and communicate with your fans worldwide?
A: We’re very intentional about the details. Paul runs all of our social media. We know that our voice is important to a lot of people. We gotta make every moment count.
Q: Are you excited to be coming down to Malaysia?
A: Beyond excited! Counting down the days!
Q: What have you got in store for your Malaysian fans during Good Vibes? Would you be showcasing anything new?
A: Fans can expect a loud, high energy show. We will definitely be playing some songs off of our new record.
Q: What are you looking forward to the most for your visit in Malaysia?
A: The culture. Pictures look beautiful, the people seem delightful, and of course, the food! Can’t wait!
Q: What is next for LANY within these coming two years?
A: Lots of touring and more music.
Q: If you aren’t doing music, what would you be up to?
A: I would be at home taking my wife out on hot dates.
Q: What kind of music are you digging right now? Any artistes or genre in particular?
A: Currently big on Frank Ocean, Toro y Moi, Lorde and London Grammar right now.
