Yesterday, the first trailer for Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time premiered and, we have to say, it got us pretty shook. Ava DuVernay‘s upcoming adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle‘s classic sci-fi young adult novel was unveiled at Disney’s D23 Expo in California — and it looks gorgeous, epic, and excitingly vibrant in terms of colour.
The story is about a young girl who goes to outer space along with her brother and a friend to find her missing scientist father. The film stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Mindy Kaling, Storm Reid, Zach Galifianakis and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
From the trailer, we see Meg Murray (Storm Reid), her brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe), and her pal Calvin (Levi Miller) traveling through space and time to rescue Murray’s father, played by Chris Pine. He’s trapped on a planet called Camazotz, which has been overtaken by an unnamed evil that threatens the entire universe.
To visit all of these distant worlds, Meg and her crew travel via a fictional physics concept called tesseract which is similar to what astrophysicists call a wormhole. The planets themselves look lush and beautiful, with strange creatures and fully-realized plant life, making these worlds seem eerily similar to our own. But way better.
In the past, many have described L’Engle’s novel, which is enormous in scope and thematically complex, to be unadaptable for the big screen. This first trailer certainly suggests otherwise. In less than two minutes, the teaser is mysterious, eye-poppingly dazzling and emotionally moving, a love letter to fans of the book.
We still have to wait a bit longer for the actual movie though, as the movie won’t hit theaters until 9th March 2018.
