British actress Jodie Whittaker will be the 13th doctor for the popular and long-running BBC sci-fi series, Doctor Who.
The 35-year-old actress is the first woman to score the time lord’s iconic role, replacing Scottish actor Peter Capaldi who has played the role since 2013. The transition from one lead actor to the next, known inside the show as a regeneration, is a hallmark of the series.

Jodie recently starred as mourning mother Beth Lattimer in the acclaimed British crime drama Broadchurch, which is chock full of Whovian connections. It was created by Doctor Who’s new showrunner Chris Chibnall who also starred as the tenth doctor David Tennant. His first season next year will be the 11th of the new generation of the show.
Chibnall remarked, “I always knew I wanted the 13th Doctor to be a woman, and we’re thrilled to have secured our No. 1 choice. Her audition for the Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role.”
