Last year, Ed Sheeran was slapped with a US$20 million plagiarism lawsuit for one of his chart-topping hits “Photograph”, alleging that Sheeran’s song is a copy of 2009 track “Amazing”, written by Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard.
“Amazing” was sung by Matt Cardle on the 2010 season of The X Factor and it has been reported that the similarities were deemed striking in terms of vocal style, words, melody, rhythm and vocal melody.
The parties involved were seeking statutory damages as well as a running royalty or injunction. Luckily for Sheeran, he just managed to settle the US$2 million lawsuit outside of court with the parties as of Monday morning.
The case has now been dismissed after the agreement was reached, and an order was signed at a California court. We hope everything’s good now!
