With the rise of crazy beauty trends that either leave us very confused or amazingly mesmerised, the concern of safety, or sometimes even hygiene and practicality, comes to mind. One example? Waxing off nose hair.
Ever since makeup artist Sepi Balini’s Instagram video of herself getting her nose hair waxed got viral, the Internet has been at a divide over whether or not nose hair should be waxed off at all.
In the short clip, wooden cuticle pushers with one end generously coated with wax are placed in her nostrils before being pulled out to remove the little hairs.
Not only does it look extremely painful, some Instagram users have also brought up scary concerns like, “This is not even safe. You can get an infection and die! Nose hairs are there for a reason. You never pluck/wax them. You trim them!”
One Instagram user also commented, “Don’t nose hairs help keep bacteria out of your nose?” The question is, how safe, or unsafe is this?
NYC-based dermatologist Dr. Sejal Shah, MD, says that waxing or plucking the nose hair is in fact dangerous as it can result in an infection that can potentially become deadly.
Nose hairs serve a protective function, so they shouldn’t be waxed off completely. To maintain them, the hairs should only be trimmed every once in a while instead.
So ladies, please DO NOT try waxing your nose hairs at home.
