It’s a known and accepted fact that being gay isn’t a choice. You can’t choose the reactions of your autonomic nervous system, which governs involuntary bodily functions like heart rate and sexual arousal. It’s like, this is probably how God made things function. And who are we to question his handiwork?
That’s what we believed, until a ground-breaking study discovered that supplementing progesterone during pregnancy, a common practice to increase baby weight and prevent miscarriage, could actually influence a baby’s sexual orientation in later life.
The study by Archives Of Sexual Behaviour looked at 34 people (17 males and 17 females) whose moms took progesterone while pregnant. The participants, all in their mid-20s, were asked to fill out a survey and participate in a formal interview with a psychologist, who asked them questions relating to their sexual orientations and histories.
It was found that men and women whose mothers were treated with progesterone were significantly less likely to describe themselves as heterosexual. These kids were 24% more likely to have had same-sex sexual behavior, 29% more likely to be attracted to the same sex and 17.6% more likely to be attracted to both sexes.
Progesterone is a naturally produced hormone that’s especially important for women’s menstrual cycles and to helps them maintain their pregnancies. However, doctors frequently prescribe moms-to-be with progesterone pills to take as a means of supporting the fertilization process and preventing miscarriages.
What a big revelation. We all knew our sexual orientations are something we’re naturally born with, but we never really understood what could possibly contribute to making us the way we are. So this could be a start.
With that said, although there are results that attest it, what really matters is to have a smooth pregnancy and be blessed with happy, healthy children. Sexual orientation shouldn’t even be a concern.
