Perhaps due to the success of La La Land, or maybe just because singing and dancing is great, it seems everyone wants to make a movie musical these days. Paris Jackson just made her acting debut in one, and now Pharrell Williams has another in the works.
Titled Atlantis, the project which is set to be based on the singer’s younger years in Virginia Beach, will reunite Pharrell with Fox, the studio he worked with on Oscar-nominated drama Hidden Figures, as producer for the film as well as providing much of the music.
The film will be directed by Michael Mayer, known for his work on Broadway, including stints on Spring Awakening and American Idiot. While Pharrell will produce the film alongside Mimi Valdes, his producing partner in Hidden Figures, as well as Life Of Pi’s producer, Gil Netter.
Looks like Fox is on board to release the project after several studios were looking at it. Initial reports suggest it will be similar to Romeo and Juliet, with a musical edge. So be warned: This could be very, very sad.
Here’s what we know. At the age of 12, Pharrell was sent to a school for gifted children where he met Chad Hugo and they formed the Neptunes. He sold his first single at the age of 19.
