Ed Sheeran Finally Gives Credit To TLC Writers For Ripping Off No Scrubs

Did Ed Sheeran copy from an iconic pop group?

Many listeners seemed to think so. Ever since his single Shape of You dropped in January, the song which was originally made for Rihanna, has been clouded in controversy. Music fans couldn’t help noticing that the track bears an uncomfortably strong likeness to a popular number from the past, TLC’s hit song No Scrubs.

Can’t unhear this, right?

In a surprising behind-the-scenes move this week, the flame-haired star seemed not just to acknowledge the accusations, but validate them by tweaking the credit list to Shape Of You, adding both Kandi Burruss and Tameka Cottle (aka Tiny) from TLC who penned the 1999 R&B track as co-writers, alongside the song’s producer Kevin Briggs.

This has given a hefty boost to the credits, as only Ed Sheeran and Snow Patrol‘s Johnny McDaid were featured on the initial listing for the song on his new album, Divide. Ed’s acknowledgement isn’t just a symbolic gesture, as the No Scrubs trio now will earn royalties from sales and streams of his single.

Kandi thanked Ed for their mention by posting a clip on Instagram, with the caption, “Thank you for allowing @majorgirl & I to share in the success of #ShapeOfYou! #1 for 7 weeks!”

Right thing to do, Sheeran.
