Oscar-winning director and actor Ben Affleck just revealed in a heartfelt Facebook post detailing his stint in rehab for successfully completing treatment over alcohol addiction.
We’re applauding Affleck for his bravery, as instead of going down the typical Hollywood road of messing up in public, he recognised that he had a problem and acted upon it before it consumed him.
He mentioned that his drinking issues were “something I’ve dealt with in the past and will continue to confront” before adding that he hopes to help others by opening up, including his three kids – Violet, 11, Seraphina, 8, and Samuel, 5.
Read his statement below:
“I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step”, he wrote.
He then paid tribute to Jennifer Garner, who he split from in 2015 and up until recently was reportedly calling off the divorce, for helping him during difficult times.
“I’m lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I’ve done the work I set out to do”, he said. “This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery.”
The multi-hyphenate also stepped down from directing a standalone Batman film in January, as confirmed by Warner Bros. It was reported that he didn’t feel he was up to the job and that the job “demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give”.
“It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require”, he said during that time. The directing job eventually went to Matt Reeves.
