Uh oh.. The Walt Disney Co. has pulled Beauty and the Beast indefinitely from Malaysian theatres as the company refuses to remove scenes involving gay character Le Fou, not complying to the Malaysian Censorship Board (LPF)’s request.
“The film has not been and will not be cut for Malaysia,” Disney mentioned in a statement via email. Theatre chain Golden Screen Cinemas has also been offering refunds to those who have purchased advanced tickets to catch the screenings.
Just yesterday, it was announced that LPF approved Beauty and the Beast for a P13 rating with minor cuts to omit the 4.5 minutes of the “gay moment” before several news outlets reported that the movie was to be shelved.
The remake of the 1991 animated musical was originally scheduled to be released on March 16.
