Hairstyles like clothes can make or break your outfit and over the years we’ve seen them evolve to either stun or shock. While we’d like to try not to think about the amount of hairspray or dye used in the process, we find ourselves drawn to more natural, wearable styles which ordinary people like you and I can pull off. Sorry Lady Gaga! Here’s our picks on who wore their hair best in 2011!
The Beehive
The most famous beehive of our time has sadly passed on. Soul sensation Amy Winehouse was almost always photographed with her hair teased and poofed up, a look that was iconic to her and her only in the past decade. The beehive is an elegant updo best paired with low necklines and bare shoulders. Other stars who are fans of the beehive are Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian.
The Slick
We’ve only seen a handful of the sleek slick hair style on celebrities and mostly on Lancome’s newest ambassador Emma Watson who chopped off her long wavy locks last year to go all pixie as well as Ashlee Simpson.
The Bob Reinvented
Jennifer Aniston can do no wrong when it comes to hair, not only has she had a hairstyle named after her, her newly chopped sleek angled bob has quickly become a hit among women around the world. We also dig Alexa Chung’s brunette wavy bob which looks absolutely chic when tied up
The Side Bun
Any woman can pull this look off with instant class and vintage by taking the bun low and to the side. This hairdo looks especially good with red lips or a red dress. Bloody deadly!
The Upknot
How high can you go, well, the higher the better apparently. The upknot is often seen on runways and for good reason. Not only is it elegant but it exudes confidence that you’re not afraid to show. Plus it gives more attention to your makeup and outfit.
Long Bangs
Long bangs can look sloppy and neither here nor there but by properly styling them you can look casual like Nicole Richie here. Make sure to trim them to sit just below your eyebrows and nothing more or else you’ll look like you’re growing them out instead.
Multi-banded Ponytail
Whoa, this was a style we used to have as kids out of fun but the irresistible Olivia Wilde took it to the red carpet at the premiere of Cowboys vs Aliens
Beach Hair
Blake Lively has been all over the news in this year for snogging top stars from Leonardo di Caprio to Ryan Reynolds. With hair like that, even we can’t help but find ourselves drawn to running our fingers through that head of hers. Tousled beach hair is easy to obtain by scrunching your hair with your fingers after volumizing hair spray.
The Side Braid
The side bun is to class what the side braid is to casual. Diane Kruger is one of the first this year to showcase the side braid before it caught on with all of Hollywood and girls all over the internet.
“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!”
From her short punky pixie crop to red braided tresses, Rihanna sure knows how to turn heads everywhere she goes. Thick braids hardly look flattering on most people without looking too kiddy but the key is in your hair color or highlights.
Vintage Mama
Ever since Milla Jovovich stole our hearts as the orange haired LeeLoo in The Fifth Element, her hair colors in films have always been vibrant and loud according to her personality. This year Milla goes 30s vintage with this updo that features chin length tight curls.
Colour Mania
Blue, purple, red, pink, yellow and black: these are some of the colors that Katy Perry has had during the past year but just last week the bubblegum pop star went pinkish blonde along with an edgy razored bob and a teal blue highlight. Drastic yet refreshing, considering her previous styles were nothing short of glam.
So which was your favourite look of 2011? If you think there are other cuts that should make the list, we’d love to hear from you here or at our forum!
