We’ve been referring to the next instalment of the Star Wars franchise Episode VIII, but only up until now as Lucasfilm has finally announced a title – The Last Jedi. It has been reported that the film will continue immediately after the final shot of J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens, when Rey hands Luke Skywalker his old lightsaber.
Directed by Rian Johnson, it is not yet clear what the plot of the film will be like, but judging by the title, it would seem like the film would place focus on Mark Hamill’s character, if he is The Last Jedi. With that said, “Jedi” can mean one person or a group of people, so we’d just have to wait to find out.
The film name also isn’t completely new as there is a 2013 novel titled The Last Jedi, written by authors Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff, which followed a lone Jedi that had gone underground after everything that happened during Revenge of the Sith.
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi has now been given a new release date, December 15 2017, although originally, the release date was May 26.
