Meatloaf is a known to be a “comfort food” of sorts. The dish is usually made of ground meat formed into a loaf shape (by cooking it in a loaf pan or forming it by hand on a flat baking pan) and baked or smoked.
More often than not, ground beef is used as part of the recipe but for some people who already know the method like the back of their hand, they may choose to modify it by using lamb, pork, or poultry – or a combination of some or all, depending on their personal preferences.
Essentially, the dish is easy to make because you won’t have to invest a lot of time in preparing it. You definitely won’t need to be a master of culinary arts for this one. Plus, it’s a great tasting crowd-pleaser and therefore, a “sure winner” for any Christmas dinner.
You will need:
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 egg
1 onion, chopped
1 cup milk
1 cup dried bread crumbs
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1/3 cup ketchup
Method:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. In a large bowl, combine the beef, egg, onion, milk and bread or cracker crumbs. Season with salt and pepper to taste and place in a lightly greased 5×9 inch loaf pan or form into a loaf and place in a lightly greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
3. In a separate small bowl, combine the brown sugar, mustard and ketchup. Mix well and pour over the meatloaf.
4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for one hour.
Note: Serve it with a side of mashed potatoes or roasted/baked vegetables.
