This is great news for the daily commuters in the greater Kuala Lumpur area as the first phase of the much awaited MRT in Malaysia is set to commence its services this Friday (16 Dec). The first phase – the Sg Buloh-Kajang line – would have 12 MRT stations and once it’s fully operational, it would serve 400,000 passengers.

The 12 stations in this first MRT line consists of Sungai Buloh, Kampung Selamat, Kwasa Damansara, Kwasa Sentral, Kota Damansara, Surian, Mutiara Damansara, Bandar Utama, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Phileo Damansara, Pusat Bandar Damansara and Semantan.

It is said that this MRT line has the capacity to serve 20,000 passengers per hour per direction and each MRT train has four coaches which can carry 1,200 people.

As this line opens, officials expect that it would lower the traffic congestions in these areas as commuters can opt to travel using the MRT for as low as RM1 for a single stop and a maximum fare of RM5.50 based on a cashless fare structure.

With the completion of phase two, this line would stretch further to another 19 stations and is estimated to serve 1.2 million people. We can’t wait!
