Remember the big hoo-ha involving Auntie Anne’s and the Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) regarding the halal certificate for the pretzel chain?
Here’s a little recap: JAKIM denied Auntie Anne’s a halal certificate due to the ‘Pretzel Dog’ on its menu, and was forced to assign a new name for the food item. It was solely because of the presence of the word ‘dog’.
Dogs are considered unclean in Islam, and apparently was not able to coincide with the halal certification for Auntie Anne’s.
Well, as of Monday (28 Nov), Auntie Anne’s has officially changed the name of its ‘Pretzel Dog’ to ‘Pretzel Sausage’ to please JAKIM to ensure the establishment would be able to obtain a halal certification.
The brand also made it a point to assure customers that all the ingredients used for the food items at Auntie Anne’s are purchased from JAKIM certified halal suppliers.
Surely this incident has drawn flak from all over the world and many have expressed their disagreement with JAKIM. Well, whatever it is, we hope everyone’s happy now.
