There’s one boy who’s so young, it’s almost illegal to like him. It doesn’t help that he’s also extremely talented and wonderfully musically-inclined. So much so that current DJ Mag’s World No.5 had nothing but good things to say about him.
It always surprises people when they discover Matan Zohar a.k.a Mat Zo’s music. Even more so when they later discover that he’s only 21 years old!
And yes, you’ve guessed it – his interest in music probably started around the same time that we were learning to read and write. At the age of eight, Mat Zo was presented with a guitar as a gift from his dad. It was the very thing that kept his musical interest growing and by the time he turned 11, he was a drummer and bassist of a jazz and rock band.
When he grew a little older (but still too young for his own good to us), his music inclinations shifted to those of electronic dance music (EDM) and DJing. The notable musical acts that got him going were world-famous acts such as Daft Punk and The Chemical Brothers.
Mat Zo picked up music production and DJing and the rest, as they say, is history.
He is what he is today because his talent has successfully pricked the ears of notable DJs such as Above & Beyond, Lange, and Daniel Kandi. And they all shared the same sentiment with regards to Mat Zo – which is that the young boy is a promising producer.
Mat Zo soon became Anjunabeats’ (Above & Beyond’s label) golden boy, continuously churning out tune after tune that EDM fans around the world have not failed to immediately love!
Undeniably, we have personally grown to love Mat Zo too! Much more so when he managed to make us laugh heaps in an exclusive interview with Lipstiq. Yes, that’s us and yes, exclusive interview. Courtesy of Livescape Asia:
Lipstiq: You started producing at a very young age & some DJs (such as Above & Beyond) have spoken very highly of your music. How did you get started?
Mat Zo: I met a mysterious old woman down a dark alleyway and she gave me special powers.
Lipstiq: Who are your main influences & inspirations? Why?
Mat Zo: Noisia, because their production technique is so ahead of its time.
Lipstiq: You just broke into the DJ Mag poll last year. What were your thoughts when you were told about the awesome news?
Mat Zo: “Great, more gigs in Asia!”
Lipstiq: What are the few things you wish women knew about men & in return, what are the few things you wish you knew about women?
Mat Zo: I’m glad some things are left a secret, but why do women always go to the toilet together?
Lipstiq: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Married with 3 kids, perhaps?
Mat Zo: Fat probably!
Lipstiq: On a scale of 1 to 10, just how excited are you about coming to Kuala Lumpur?
Mat Zo: 10.
Lipstiq: We have readers who’d really like to hear/read a personal message from the man, Mat Zo himself. So, is there anything you’d like to say to them?
Mat Zo: Yo sup.
That made us want to pinch his cheeks. Seriously.
And we can’t wait to see Mat Zo live in Kuala Lumpur for the first time ever! Want to watch him play his debut gig in Malaysia? Then head on over to KL Live on the 31st of December 2011 for ESCAPE: NYE, where Mat Zo will play alongside big acts such as Pete Tong and Marco V.
We’re not kidding! Go here to read more about it.
