Why does modesty only apply to women alone?
That was the question asked by Masih Alinejad, an activist who thinks that the rules of modesty should apply to both men and women. Together with an online movement, My Stealthy Freedom, people in Iran are challenging Iran’s strict dress code.
This has resulted in a nationwide #MenInHijab social media campaign, which has Iranian men wearing the hijab to question the strict religious dress code that is enforced on Iranian woman.
Women in Iran can be either fined or imprisoned by the ‘religious police’ if they are not wearing a headscarf.
“Iranian women should live in taking full advantage of their rights and being those determining themselves how they dress. The fact that they are forced to wear something against their will tarnishes, in reality, the image of Iranians everywhere in the world.” said Alinejad.
“In our society, a woman’s existence and identity is justified by a man’s integrity, and in many cases the teachings of a religious authority or government officials influence a man’s misguided sense of ownership over women”.
Thank you Masih Alinejad, faith in humanity restored!
