Malaysians, this is big news!
The Health Ministry will be increasing the legal age for alcohol consumption from 18 to 21, and will begin imposing labels on alcoholic beverages to remind consumers that alcohol can be hazardous to health.
This will come into effect on December 1 2017 and those who fail to comply with the regulations on the sale and labelling requirements will be imprisoned for not more than two years or slapped with a fine not exceeding RM10,000.
According to the newly added sub-regulation 2A under Regulation 361 of the Food Regulations 1985 on the “General standard for alcoholic beverage”, it states, “There shall also be written in the label on a package of a non-serif character not less than 12 point size lettering, the words ‘MEMINUM ARAK BOLEH MEMBAHAYAKAN KESIHATAN’”.
The health warning is also required to be placed on a notice in front of the locations where alcoholic beverages are sold, together with signs on the prohibition of sales to those below the age of 21.
University students, it looks like you’ve got to wait just a wee bit more before you can party..
