Uber drivers in Penang have voiced their dissatisfaction against Uber management regarding the recently announced rates. While the new rates work in favour of consumers, it is bound to have a disastrous effect on Penang Uber driver’s earnings.
“We have been treated like low class drivers,” said Francis Loke, a spokesman for the drivers, at a press conference to air their complaints. Uber recently announced new rates with a zero starting fare, with only RM0.50 per/kilometre or RM0.20 per/minutes for all Penang Uber drivers.
Since Uber takes about 20 to 25 % of the fare as fee, most of the drivers feel like they cannot make ends meet at this rate. What is even worse is that a few Penang Uber drivers have been suspended for being too vocal in voicing out the issue.
“We are considering to quit driving under Uber App until Uber Management revised the fare which is more reasonable for us,” Loke added.
