So, a while back a very good friend mine spoke to me of this supposedly amazing restaurant that’s just opened. It was a lot of talk that went something like, “Oh my god, the food there is so good. You have to try it!” And I thought, do I really have to because in the Klang Valley there are so many restaurants that deem to be great but are not actually that good. Anyway, after a little thinking, I decided to go ahead and check out this eatery my friend talked about that goes by the name of WhupWhup.
About The Space
Located in the industrial area of Subang Jaya in SS13, WhupWhup sure did pick a strange place to call home but somehow it works. The restaurant was founded by Tan Chung Liang, Sim Pojoo and Levi Asher, and collectively they have the kind of passion that was able to bring the vision of WhupWhup come to life. Upon entering the restaurant you’re already amazed at the the simplicity yet awesomely quirky establishment. It’s big and bright yellow door almost calls upon you to come in, and so I did.
Unlike a lot of restaurants, WhupWhup has one thing that most lack – space. And this is because the restaurant that it is now, used to be an industrial yarn-seals factory. There’s so much to love about the exterior and interior of this eatery, and you can really tell that a lot of thought as well as effort was pumped into this joint.
About the food
Not a lot of places I go to, surprise me and WhupWhup managed to do just that. Each bite is a real pleasure and you can really taste the love that’s put into the food. At this establishment they focus a lot on quantity and most importantly, quality. They also specialise in coffee and French cuisine. I had myself the Duck 3 Ways and was completely blown away by how delicious it was, I mean, my tastebuds were having a real party.
I also made it a point to try the Beef Bourguinon and it was beyond what I expected. The chef, Tan Chung Liang clearly knows what he’s doing and is damn good at it, because the beef literally slid off the bone. It was cooked to frickin’ perfection.
The coffee list has enough for you to be intrigued and not too much that you’d be overwhelmed! And they’re all so good! I would know because I had more than just one from the menu.
About the space
WhupWhup provides more than just great food and coffee. They provide a space for the community to bring out the creativity in them. They also aim to provide a space for events, may it be work-related functions, weddings and anything that the community may need. In WhupWhup, diners can also find the very delightful Yarn Yard where small vendors display their goods that are for sale. So, not only can you eat and drink coffee at WhupWhup, you can also shop, which is a total win for me! There is also two more spaces available for smaller scale events that sit on top of the main hall. Atas, which is directly translated to upstairs can accommodate to a total of up to 50 people, which makes it a great spot to hold a more intimate party.
When asked why the name WhupWhup, I was told that it’s the sound that describes joy, which is exactly what I felt when eating there!
WhupWhup is located at No. 12, Jalan SS13/3B, 47500 Subang Jaya, Selangor. You can also visit them on their website.
