Victoria’s Secret: So you want to be an “Angel”?

Before the lights come on high and the music’s pumped up loud, before the backstage havoc kicks off with a throng of makeup artists and stylists fussing over every single detail on their faces and hair, and even before the fittings plus the strapping on of the wings, the real secret behind the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show takes place months before the actual event.

Almost every year, at the Victoria’s Secret headquarters, an open casting call is held in search of the next “Angel”. Call the participants overly confident plus enthusiastic or call them “supermodel wannabes” but being an “Angel” goes beyond just skimpy lingerie and fluffy wings.

Because once chosen, the newest girl will undergo the “Angel Boot Camp” of exercise and modeling challenges. They would have only three weeks to do all the crunches and squats they need to do to get in shape for the show.

Sure, the thought of sashaying down a runway while gold dust and glitter falls everywhere around you, coupled with flashing bulbs, a thousand and one cameras, and the idea of being broadcasted all over the globe sounds like the ultimate fantasy.

But do you know what it takes to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel?

An “Angel” needs to be fearless because come on; it’s not easy to maintain your stride dressed in almost nothing while walking in six-inch heels on a sleek surface. Let’s not even get started on the heavy wings of all varieties. Some can weigh up to 30 pounds per pair (read: Alessandra Ambrosio’s “Passion Play” wings encrusted with 105,000 Swarovski crystals).

Also, what they’re looking for really are healthy bodies, and energy. Lots of energy. An “Angel” isn’t just another model at a fashion show solemnly walking down the runway like hangers with outfits hanging on them.

As much as they are needed to drive the boys wild when they’re strutting the catwalk, the “Angels” must also appeal to the ladies. And we mean that in a very non-lesbian way. A Victoria’s Secret Angel needs to be an icon of beauty and confidence, meant to inspire women to be strong, sexy, and comfortable with their bodies.

So, while an attractive physical appearance is a must, an attractive personality is essential. If you’ve watched the previous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows, you’d notice that the “Angels” have to be highly energetic, alluring, and charming, because they’re more than just models.

She needs to be able to project that she embraces her sexuality with pride while brandishing her curves for all to see. A Victoria’s Secret Angel is a brand ambassador, and an international spokesperson for the name:

Well, it’s not just about doing a catwalk in sky-high heels without tripping over your own foot, that’s for sure!
