It seems a bit farfetched to say that she came all the way from New York City, US, to perform for us because any Malaysian who has the slightest interest in the local music industry would know that Zee Avi is our very own homegrown darling.
Not only is she currently a signed songstress to Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records, she has also become the lead in Malaysia’s newfound consciousness in English music, singing and songwriting.
Last night, Zee Avi made her proud return to Malaysia as part of her most extensive Asian tour. And that is after having just conquered Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan just a week ago. Dubbed “Zee Avi’s Homecoming Tour 2011”, she came bearing “gifts” from her new album, “Ghostbird”.
The night opened with Narmi from One Buck Short, who serenaded us with music that sounded like an amazing toss between John Mayer and Jason Mraz. And who said our local music industry lacked real talent, huh? Then, less than an hour later, our home girl Zee Avi took the stage with her acoustic percussionist band.
The sultry folk rock heiresses then played songs off “Ghostbird” and even sang us a Mandarin song! Is there anything Zee Avi can’t do?
And of course, the night wouldn’t have been complete if she didn’t slip in songs that we already know the words to by heart. The crowd happily swayed and sang along to “Bitter Heart” and “Kantoi”. Yes, all 2,000 fans who attended her showcase last night:
In short, Zee Avi’s Homecoming Tour 2011 at KL Live was sweet. Almost romantic. Thank you, Zee, for the wonderful songs. Thank you for the music.
