A new, deadly virus is sweeping across countries, and recently hit our neighbour, Singapore. The Zika virus, is a mosquito-borne disease, similar to dengue and chikungunya. Now reported in at least 24 countries, Zika virus is currently commanding worldwide attention, especially because there is no vaccine or medicine to treat this lethal disease.
Pregnant women should be particularly cautious, as the virus has been linked to microcephaly, a birth defect that can affect brain development. This results in babies being born with usually small head, which can cause severe developmental issues.
So if you’re experiencing mild fever, a rash, some joint pain, AND if you have recently just visited Latin America or Singapore, it’s best to get yourselves checked as soon as you can.
Here are some steps you can take to prevent the Zika virus:
- Use mosquito repellents – indoor & outdoors
- Sleep in air-conditioned rooms
- Wear long sleeved tops and long pants whenever possible
- Don’t visit affected countries for the time-being
Take care, and spread the word around. Remember, prevention is better than cure.
