To celebrate the ending of its 30-year anniversary celebration of its tenTenTEN! programme, Five Arts Centre is presenting you with a fun-filled musical about reaching for your dreams. Showcasing first-time playwright June Tan, this production takes on the representation of the suburban in a musical set in Cheras.
Cheras THE MUSICAL! follows the journey of Cherrie Lum, a lounge singer who had one hit in the 1980’s. Living in her past glory, Cherrie is deluded in thinking she is still the star she once was. This causes tension between Cherrie and her children, Blossom, an overly-active entrepreneur, and Jackson, a pragmatic cosmetic salesman as well as the family’s sole breadwinner.
When a singing contest called Sing It Out is announced, Cherrie, Jackson and Uncle Chong (Cherrie’s boyfriend) encourage Blossom to participate, believing that if she wins, they will have a chance to leave Cheras. The family members gradually reveal their desires to escape from their lives in Cheras, and pin their hopes on Blossom as their ticket out. Just watch this musical comedy to see if the family’s plan will work out!
Helming this production is actor-director Chee Sek Thim of Cakap Dapur: R&D Stories, the self directed one-man show by renowned playwright Leow Puay Tin. Cheras THE MUSICAL! is directed by Adriane Palikat and choreographed by the award-winning Suhaili Micheline, who has won several Grand Championships of The World titles in dance.
