Have you ever wondered why breakfast was called breakfast? We joke about it being “break” “fast”. But you know what though? It’s true. “Breakfast” does literally mean “breaking the fast”. Essentially, the first meal of the day is the first time you’re eating after a long night’s sleep. Sleeping equals no eating equals fasting. Make sense, right?
Technicalities aside, “breaking the fast” is commonly practised around the world, transferred between cultures (although the types of food may differ) because breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In general, people who have breakfast have more energy and therefore function better throughout the day (e.g. do better in school, more productive at work).
Plus, it kick-starts your metabolic rate and helps you stave off binging for the rest of the day. All in all, a good breakfast fuels you up and gets you ready for challenges ahead! Amped up to get some of that good breakfast to get you going yet? Well, what do we have here? Only about oh, some of the best places in town to get ‘em:
1. La Bodega (16, Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur)
The place is bistro, deli, and lounge all-in-one. Some people go there for their board games (Scrabble, Monopoly, Pictionary, etc.), some people go there for their delicious Spanish food and drinks (paella, tapas, sangria, etc.)
But not us. We go there for their awesome “Big Breakfast”!
Served from anytime between 7am to 3pm, La Bodega’s hearty “Big Breakfast” consists of two fresh farm eggs (Poached? Scrambled? Sunny side up? Take your pick!), grilled chicken sausages, crispy beef bacon, grilled tomato, baked beans, and sautéed mushrooms on a slide of homemade toast. All that yummy in your tummy for only RM22.
2. Tom, Dick, & Harry’s (18, Lorong Rahim Kajai 14, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, 60000 Kuala Lumpur)
Your friendly neighbourhood pub just got better! By night it’s a thriving watering hole, but by day (weekends, to be exact), their doors open bright and early to serve you delectable breakfast goodies!
Cue mouth watering uncontrollably right about now.
From 10am to 3pm, the good people at Tom, Dick, & Harry’s prepares huge plates of the American “Big Breakfast”. It comes with two sunny side ups, hash brown, crispy-to-perfection bacon, baked beans, sautéed mushrooms, grilled tomato, and toasted bread. Something you could quite possibly share for only RM20 nett.
3. Antipodean Café (20, Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur)
One of Kuala Lumpur’s favourite breakfast haunts just about managed to lure us into its clutches. We admit it – the writings on the wall got us curious. Did we also mention that they take their coffee really, really seriously?
We love coffee all day long. More please, yes please.
Their “Big Breakfast” is served all day long and it comes with your standard toast (but buttered!), a choice of bacon or sausage (chicken, beef, or pork), sautéed mushrooms, scrambled eggs, and hash brown. Get filled to the brim for RM18.
And of course the above places serve more than just their “Big Breakfast”s. Each have their own specialties – you would need to rock up to each individual one to find out what else is on their menu! Have fun charging up your mornings (and perhaps some lazy “do nothing” weekends) with ’em.
You’re welcome.
