We all love how a good pair of shoes make us feel, there’s nothing like strutting around town in comfort so it’s important to have good and sturdy padding but what about when you get home and kick them off? Hello cold marble floor?
If you’ve always avoided rugs for whatever reason, reintroducing them into your life will do so much more your soul and home. Here are some popular types of rugs you can opt for your home!
Animal-hide
In the past, people used to use animal-hide rugs because they had beautiful prints and textures but these have become increasingly rare because they’re not animal-friendly but if you scour through old Victorian markets in Europe or flea markets you can still find a well preserved piece if lucky. Such rugs symbolize power and wealth but we find them a tad bit scary.
If you’re really looking to get an animal-hide rug, opt for a sheepskin one, they make wonderful throw rugs and you can get them at Ikea for under RM300. Cow prints and zebra stripes are pretty popular patterns and you can get artificial ones at most design stores these days.
Oriental rugs encompasses rugs that are Chinese, Indian, Persian, Turkish and Caucasian based on the place and people who made them. Unlike modern rugs, these rugs have intricate unique traditional designs weaved into them with colors so vibrant that they are literally works of art for your floor. It is said that an Oriental rug is a purchase you will have forever.
Caucasian rugs
These rugs come mostly from Iran, Turkey and Armenia, they’re mostly sold by Middle Eastern vendors in Malaysia. They are made in primary colors and have a provincial princely look to them. These type of carpets are usually huge and can cost anything from a few hundreds to thousands depending on workmanship.
Chinese rugs
Also known as Nangxia after the region where they originated from, almost all traditional Chinese rugs have Buddhist or Taoist motifs with the infinity knot or dragon and are usually made in hues of navy blue, ivory and yellow out of silk. Very pretty but it’ll be hard to get your other furniture to match it.
Shag rugs
While the name may suggest something naughty, the reason why it’s name so because it does resemble a shaggy dog! The shag rug used to be popular in the sixties but are quietly making a comeback with a texture that dares you to not run your fingers through it again and again. These rugs give your room a casual yet glamourous feel that is both appealing and warm. They come in a variety of colors and materials according to your needs.
Braided rugs
These are the sort of rugs we used to see back in grandma’s and like the patch quilts, they are colorful, bouncy to walk on. They are made of thick pieces of cloth or hay. The braids are meant to help remove dirt from your feet before you enter the house by rubbing your feet on them hence the texture and pattern.
We all love the luxurious feel carpets or rugs give as you run your feet through them and unlike the shabby “Welcome” mats our mums used to buy, you can now get them in all types of shapes, sizes, materials and colors.
Rugs are a quick and easy way to add color, warmth, texture and character to a room by covering a certain portion be it big or small with one. They also give a sense of coziness and focal point to the room so go on and get one and watch your home transform!
