10 Safety Tips for Women in Malaysia

KLCC-Kuala-Lumpur-Malaysia

The streets of Malaysia is no longer a safe place for women and children. Just over the weekend, the Malaysian community lost a dedicated care giver who was stabbed to death during a charity run in Bukit Gasing. Two days ago, a woman has a mobile phone stolen from her at knife-point, but she was then attacked when they tried to kidnap her daughter from her. She suffered slashes on her arms, while protecting her child. On the same day in Johor, TVB actress Vivien Yeo reported that her family was carjacked at AEON Bukit Indah, Johor. The number of crimes that go unreported in Malaysia is horrifying, yet we still do our best to survive and protect those who are dear to us.

We cannot stress enough just how important it is put yourself out of harm’s way, but sadly these accidents strike when we least expect it. The most we can do is keep a vigilant eye out for danger and to always be aware of wherever we go. And as we hope that the authorities will do something more to improve the safety of women in Malaysia, here are ten helpful tips to keep in mind when you’re going out, wherever you are.

1. Always walk on the opposite side of the street. That way you can see motorists coming your way.

2.Have your car keys or house keys ready before you head to your house or carpark.

3. Do not leave your car door open wherever you are, even if you’re right outside. Close your doors as soon as you get in your vehicle.

4. Carry a tube of pepper spray and carry it in your hand especially when you are walking outdoors and alone.

5. When you are faced with a mugger or thief that demands your belongings, give it to them. Your life is worth more than your handbag.

6. Carry your mobile phone and spare cash in your pockets, so if your handbag gets snatch, you won’t totally be at loss.

7. Have full attention of your surroundings and keep your eyes and ears open.

8. Avoid walking or standing in public places and having your eyes locked on your phone. Someone can just snatch it off you before your eyes.

9. Keep a look out for suspicious faces. We’ve gotten to a point where anyone could be an enemy, so avoid walking alone.

10. Watch out if you notice people standing or walking very closely to you. They could be trying to steal your purse.
