10 Antioxidant-Rich Foods

Antioxidants are chemical compounds that help the body protect itself from destructive free radicals. Examples of free radicals include cigarette smoke, toxins, sunlight, and pesticides that can damage the body’s cells, cause cell death or cancer.

You don’t need special supplements to get your source of antioxidants as they’re generally found in foods rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.

1. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are rich in lycopenes, an antioxidant compound that gives tomatoes it’s rich red color. Tomatoes are found in most foods, and if you’re a lover of pastas, make your own tomato puree by blending a couple ripe potatoes with herbs.

2. Peaches

Peaches are high in lutein, an antioxidant that gives peaches its bright gorgeous color and is also beneficial for the health of your  skin and more importantly, eyes.

3. Spinach

Spinach is one of the best sources of antioxidants. Rich in beta carotene, vitamins and iron, spinach will help the body fight against prostate and ovarian cancer, aging and even protects the health of your heart.

4. Berries

Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are are bursting in antioxidants. Blueberries, especially are great as they’re high in fiber and low in calories and fats. They contain anthocyanins, a plant chemical that gives the berry its rich blue hue that provides protection against heart disease. It can also improve night vision and reduce blood glucose levels.

5. Kale

Kale is one of the healthiest vegetables in the planet. This nutritional powerhouse is rich in vitamins A, C and K, and rich in carotenoids and flavanoids, which are associated to anti-cancer health benefits.

6. Capsicum

Capcisum or bell peppers are greater sources of vitamin C as opposed to oranges. They’re so versatile to consume and delicious to eat. Bell peppers can bring down blood pressure and neutralize free radicals, and even has anti-inflammatory properties.

7. Corn

This juicy hi-fiber vegetable is rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, a cartenoid that plays a crucial role in protecting vision and maintaining ocular health.

8. Cherries 

Cherries are delightful sweet treats that are high and both anthocyanin and quercitin, an anti-inflammatory pythochemical that can treat allergies, heart disease and cancer.

 9. Beans

Beans are great for overall consumption. They are high in fiber, protein iron and folic acid. They’re low in fat and can even manage diabetes and lower your risk of a stroke or high blood pressure.

 10. Cranberries

Cranberries are miracle fruits. Not only a great cocktail mixer, cranberries are filled with phytonutrients that protects the body against heart disease, cancer and even prevent any bladder infections.
