On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th November, take a day off from your everyday routine and join dozens of local, regional and international bands, musicians, comedians,sculptors, performance artists, visual artists and other zeitgeist-defying acts when Urbanscapes Festival 2013 – The Big Weekend – opens its doors at the Malaysian Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) for a weekend-long carousel of creativity and fun for all ages.
Headlining this year at the are Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand, Two Door Cinema Club, Efterklang, and Tegan and Sara.
Besides the currently headliners, don’t miss performances by Pierre Hollins, the comedian Time Out London describes with just two words–‘Bloody Funny’–as well as Oh Chentaku!, Kyoto Protocol, They Will Kill Us All, Kuah Jenhan, Studio Bikin and Allthatissolid.
But the festival itself isn’t all you should be excited about. In addition to the Big Weekend, Urbanscapes are giving indie music fans two additional Urbanscapes Satellite Shows featuring Canadian indie legends Metric on December 3rd. Also taking the stage Urbanscapes Satellite Show are Denmark’s Mew and US prog-rockers Explosions in the Sky. Mew and Explosions in the Sky will perform on 31st October at KL Live.
Urbanscapes ‘All-Access Passes’ will commence sales at www.ticketpro.com.my at 10am on Monday. The All-Access Pass is priced at RM397, and will grant entry to both Urbanscapes Satellite Shows and Urbanscapes 2013.

Joining the massive two-day lineup includes Australian indie rockers Last Dinosaurs, UK’s a cappella team Black Voices. The local arts lineup is also set to impress you. Actorlympics will feature the who’s who in the Malaysian comedy scene with legends like Patrick Teoh, Afdlin Shauki, Kuah Jenhan, Douglas Lim, Nell Ng and Rashid Salleh collaborating to bring a touch of those “Whose Line Is It Anyway” improvisational comedy shows to Urbanscapes.
Fans of gore and horror should definitely check out Kult’s Real Horror Show. Curated by Singapore art gallery Kult 3D, the show includes a series of installations of monsters and ghouls created by some of South East Asia’s most gruesome illustrators, B-movie horror montages and shockingly grabbing hands-on experiences including monster face-painting, T-shirt silk screening and a doodling workshop.
For electronica fans, stay tuned to Deer in the Park, curated by The Deer Society with a lineup that includes veteran local stars like Flica, newbie sensations like Dangerdisko and Bass Sekolah as well as regional talents such as Indonesia’s Midnight Runners and Bottlesmoker.
Urbanscapes 2013 will also be an occasion to remember for local music fans as Malaysia most important indie music pioneers Nice Stupid Playground and Damn Dirty Apes will take you on a ride through the good old days.
