Two modest Singaporean hawker stalls made history last week by becoming the first street vendors in the world to receive recognition from the prestigious Michelin Guide.
Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle, and Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle were placed among 29 dining establishments featured in the new Singapore guide.
Singapore is the first south-east Asian country in the world, and the fourth in Asia, to be rated by the Michelin Guide.
Chan Hon Meng of Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle, which is located at the Chinatown Food Complex, mentioned that he was honoured to receive the recognition and hopes that his stall’s success will encourage more of the younger generation to enter the hawker trade as many are suffering due to the lack of successors for the stalls.
Get this, Chan also hails from Malaysia! We’re so proud. His signature chicken rice dish costs S$2.50 per plate. Have you tried it? 😉
