Miley Cyrus was named one of Barbara Walters’ ‘The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013’ and in an interview for an ABC special, the pop star opened up about her failed relationship with former fiancé Liam Hemsworth.
She told Walters, “I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think conquering that fear this year was actually bigger than any other transition that I had this entire year.”
“I don’t ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like, without them, you can’t be yourself,” she added.
Following their on-and-off relationship after they met while filming “The Last Song” in 2009, Cyrus, 21 and Hemsworth, 23, split and reunited at least twice before becoming engaged in May 2012. Cyrus was last seen wearing her 3.5 carat Neil Lane engagement ring in August and in the following month, representatives for the two confirmed that the engagement was off.
“I don’t think I realized what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn’t change being engaged,” the former Disney star told Walters. “It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years. But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy. I wait for those moments of silence, when I’m just at my house, by myself.”
When Walters asked the “Wrecking Ball” singer if she ever wanted to be married, she replied, “I think I’ll want that in the time that it needs to be.”
Although she’s been putting up a wild-child front, this interview convinces us that the Miley we once knew and loved as teenagers was never really gone after all.
