While some of us are blessed with healthy skin, others suffer from dry, peeling and flaky skin. However, we’ve found ways that can help ease up your skin condition.
For those with mildly dry skin, here are eight tips to help combat your problem.
1. Use soap-free cleansers – Regular soap cleansers contain harsh chemicals and fragrances that could further aggravate your dry skin. Instead, use gentle cleansers that are specially formulated for dry and sensitive skin. Your skin will thank you and these cleansers will help to strengthen your skin from the inside.
2. Don’t use hot water – Cold or lukewarm water is fine but do avoid the use of hot water when washing your face. Hot water will strip your skin of important natural oils it produces and leave your skin dehydrated.
3. Use day and night creams – These creams provide the nutrients your skin needs specifically, for the day and night. Compared to regular moisturisers, these creams are also thicker, richer and they do a better job in rehydrating the skin. After washing your face and applying an alcohol-free toner, spread a thin layer of the cream onto your face and gently pat so that it gets absorbed into the skin.
4. Use a humidifier – The use of air-conditioners will dry out the air circulating around your home. Invest in a good humidifier to keep the air moisture levels in check so that it doesn’t contribute to your dry skin problem.
5. Exfoliate your skin – Exfoliating can slough off dead skin cells and smooth the skin. However, many facial scrubs are too harsh so they can further dry out and irritate the skin. Switch out your facial scrub for a damp baby’s wash cloth and massage your face gently in circular motions. If you really wish to use a scrub, try to DIY your own with some honey, lemon juice and sugar.
6. Use moisturizing facial masks regularly – Facial masks can help to restore and contain the moisture in your skin, so do this twice a week to keep your skin plump and soft. Moisturising sheet masks works wonders for the skin. If you can’t get your hands on those, try dipping a wash cloth in some ice-cold milk, squeeze out the excess and place the wash cloth over your face for 10 minutes, then rinse off. The lipids in the milk will hydrate your skin and help to prevent your skin from getting dry and flaky.
7. Drink plenty of water – Increase your water levels and drink up! It is even more important to keep your skin and body hydrated at all times when you have dry skin, so always keep a bottle of water close so you.
8. Protect your skin from the sun – Whenever you’re going to be out in the sun, don’t forget to apply sunscreen lotion to protect your skin from the harsh UVA and UVB rays. These rays can damage the skin and soak up the moisture from your skin, so it is vital not to forget your sunscreen.
