A YouTube video called “It’s Your Fault” has gone viral for the good reason of sending an important message with some sense of humor.
The video was uploaded by All India Bakchod, an Indian comedy collective. The word Backchod translates to “trashtalkers”.
The three-and-a-half minute video was aimed at addressing the comments made in the wake of the gang rape of a young woman in New Delhi
back in December. According to sources, public figures made a number of suggestions on how to prevent sexual assaults – cracking down on short skirts, racy movies and Chinese food.
Featuring Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin and model Juhi Pande, the hosts embrace the comments that when a woman gets raped, it’s her fault, and not the attacker.
Koechlin says at the start of the video cheekily:
“Do you think rape is something men do out of a desire for control, empowered by years of patriarchy?
“You’ve clearly been misled by the notion that women are people too”. [Source]
The video sends a clear-cut message that women are not to be blamed for being victims of sexual assault. According to Ashish Shakya, a member of the comedy collective, the women’s upbeat tone is meant to highlight the absurdity of the statements.
