The cold-shoulder is so in this season! Taking cue from the sporty 80s look, the cold-shoulder is a design that can be seen everywhere from ASOS to your nearest fashion outlet. Seen on dresses, chiffon tunics, and basic cotton shirts, the cold-shoulder is both flattering and adds a hint of sexy to a basic everyday look.
The cold-shoulder doesn’t have to cost you much. A pair of good scissors is basically all you need to make this look with an old t-shirt you have lying in your closet and it’ll only take you about 15 minutes.
This week, we’ll be sharing a simple tutorial on how you can make your own cold-shoulder top with just a plain t-shirt and scissors. But since the whole punk trend is coming back in style, we’ve decided to glue on some spikes on the sleeves to give it some punk-rock glamor.
What you need:
A t-shirt
A pair of fabric scissors
Studs (We used the studs off an old bracelet, but you can easily get them at Art Friend or your craft stores)
Glue
Instructions
1. Lay your t-shirt out on a flat surface. Cut out a semi-circle. If you’re not totally sure about the size, improvise and start with a small semi-circle first. Cut it out, then put the shirt on to see if it flatters your shoulders and arms.
2. Once you’re happy with the cut, work on the the second shoulder. You can fold the t-shirt so the sleeves are parallel with each other and you can just cut along the lines from the next sleeve.
3. When you’ve finished with both sleeves, you can cut out the collar to suit your preferred neckline. Once it’s completely, use your scissors to smoothen out the jagged edges of your cuts. This is to smoothen it all out. Alternatively, you can use a lighter to slowly burn out the little edges. Just be careful to not set yourself or your top on fire.
4. Now that you’ve completed the cold-shoulder, try it on to see how it fits. Then, you can start personalizing your top with your own embellishments. We’ve decided to use some spiky studs from an old bracelet to give the top a rugged punk look.
5. Using the same method as our embellished sleeves tutorial, place a piece of plastic or newspaper under the fabric so the glue doesn’t stick the back portion of your top together. Glue on the studs and let it dry!
And there you have it – your own punk glam top you can wear when you go out on a casual day out, and right to a rock concert after! Perhaps we made this just in time for Good Vibes Festival on August 17th.
