In April, Indian authorities had a debate on banning pornography as they’ve suspected a direct connection between sexual assault and looking at pornographic videos.
Kamlesh Vaswani, a lawyer based in the city of Indore said: “They corrupt the people. They corrupt the mind. Indian kids are accessing more graphic and brutal videos”.
Former Indian-Canadian porn star-turned-Bollywood actress, Sunny Leone says there is no barrier between pornography and India’s rape crisis. Vaswani blames the former porn star for popularizing pornography in India. “She deserves to go to jail if she continues to promote pornography,” he added.
Appearing on a news channel, she dismissed fears that adult material was linked to sex crime:
“Pornography is not for people who think it’s for real. It’s fantasy and it’s entertainment”.
“It’s complete nonuse to blame rape on adult material out there. Educaton starts at home. It’s mums and dads sitting with their children and teaching them what is right and wrong”.
Noted Bollywood actor, John Abraham also defended her, saying those seeking to blame pornography for rapes were missing the root cause of the problem in India – social attitudes to women and a lack of education.
“By banning something you’re not going to solve the problem. The world over, people have access to porn. Are there rape cases like this (of the five-year-old) that exist the world over? No.
“Did rape cases exist before porn came into being? Yes,” he said.
While pornography may be a semi factor in the increasingly brutal rape cases in India, social attitudes are the major cause to be blamed. What are your thoughts?
