Angelina Jolie has really made an example of herself recently by minimizing her chances of breast and now ovarian cancers. It all started when it was revealed that Jolie carried a faulty gene (BRCA1), sharply increasing her risks of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
In her own words she “decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk” which is exactly what she did as she underwent a double mastectomy. This reduced her risk from 87% to 5%, an amazing difference in figures! However she still lives with a 50% chance of ovarian cancer so she is going to do exactly what she did with her breasts and eliminate the option by having her ovaries removed.
The actress hopes that other women will be able to benefit from her experience as it is a topic close to home for her. She lost her mother to the disease and doesn’t want the same to happen to hers quoting “I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer”. (Source)
We think it is great how proactive she has been in all of this, not only undergoing one traumatic operation but two. Ladies do not forget to go for your check-ups!
