Child stars turned fashion designers, The Olsen twins have made a huge name for themselves in the fashion industry.
When growing up in the eyes of the public, things don’t usually go the right way. It is pretty much a proven fact that growing up in the arms of Hollywood will turn any child star into a mess at some point or another. But not the Olsen twins.
Mary-Kate and Ashley ran the complete opposite direction of growing up in Hollywood – and they showed us that they don’t take things for granted.
Mary-Kate and Ashley became household names at just 6-months-old. Maybe it was the fact that they were adorable identical twins, but the public just fell in love with them. At the age of 10, they started to take things into their own hands. Their parents made them sit in every meeting about any business venture that included them, as a way for them to learn and pick up on how the industry works – and that was the right choice indeed.
After deciding to take a step back, go to school to clearly figure out what they wanted to do with their life – fashion was the only thing they wanted. And that’s when they decided to take it all into their hands – the designing, the fabricating, and the business side of all. Mary-Kate and Ashley made sure they were involved and hands on with the situation.
Being twins, it’s stereotypical for them to wear the same things. Whether it’s matching dresses or colours – they would still add their own twist to make it as individual as they are.
In an interview with Ellen DeGenerous, that they said that they loved wearing adult clothes when they were 10 years old, except they would have to cut them down to fit them. When they were asked about their inspiration – both of them said it was their mother, Jarnette Jones.
We started to notice the change in style between Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen when they we’re reaching the age of 13. Mary-Kate had dyed her hair maroon, and that’s then we started to see a bit of their signature looks. The New York Times declared Mary-Kate a fashion icon for pioneering her signature (and now popular among celebrities and fans alike) “homeless” look.
Despite being insperable, their style are complete opposites to each other, but equally as unique. Known as the ‘vintage queens’ they didn’t follow the usual trends on the market and what teens at their age was suppose to be wearing – instead they followed the style that they loved and created as their own.
Together, Mary Kate and Ashley decided to venture into opening several clothing lines. They were involved with a children clothing line in their younger days, as a form of endorsements but when the time was right, the Olsen twins launched their own couture fashion label, “The Row”, named after Savile Row in London. “The Row” is a big choice for all the celebrities in Hollywood. In 2007, they launched Elizabeth & James, a contemporary collection inspired by many of their unique vintage finds and pieces in their personal wardrobes. They have also released a women’s clothing line for J.C. Penny, called Olsenboye. They wanted to make sure there was something more economic for every one to try.
At the age of 26, the twins recently recived an award at the CFDA’s 2012, being the ‘Women Wear Designers of the Year’. If you ask us, that is a huge accomplishment at their age.
The fact that they decided to make a name for themselves in the industry rather to just dangle off their given fame – it is pretty inspiring.
