Coinciding with Earth Day 2022, The Body Shop launched a new store concept – the first of its kind in Malaysia – at Sunway Pyramid shopping mall. The Body Shop Activist Maker Workshop and Store is an interactive ‘activist workshop’ that encourages people to explore products and discover how – together – we can fight for a fairer and more beautiful world.
The Body Shop’s new Activist Maker Workshop and Store is a place for play and discovery, where shoppers can stay and get inspired by the brand’s legendary beauty products and ethical purpose. During the launch of the store, one of the highlights was the vibrant, sustainable artwork created by multi-talented Malaysian artist Nini Marini. Injecting her personal style of bright colours inspired by nature, Nini used plastic pegs made from recycled The Body Shop plastic packaging to create the mural. Inspired by the theme “climate change”, the artwork challenges us to change our patterns and move towards “closing the loop” for climate change.
The Body Shop works with The Sea Monkey Project to turn plastic packaging returned by customers to the stores into beautiful recycled products such as detangling combs, tube winder keys and soap dishes. The plastic pegs used by Nini in her artwork were produced by The Sea Monkey Project. Twelve mini artworks by Sunway University School of Arts students – also inspired by climate change – used the same kind of pegs as well.
Customers of the new store will also experience new features, such as:
Activism Hub: The store features an activism hub where people can discover the brand’s activist roots, as well as campaign for social change around issues ranging from gender equality to fighting cosmetics animal testing. Customers can also find out how they can get involved and take a stand with The Body Shop’s global and local collective of fearless activists. And as always, The Body Shop’s friendly, knowledgeable Activist Maker Workshop store teams will be on hand to help shoppers experience and play with products like never before. They will be happy to offer expert advice, personalized makeovers and body care, skincare and haircare experiential demonstrations.
Refill station: The Body Shop is on a mission to use as little plastic as possible with aluminium refill bottles that can be cleaned and brought back to the store to be refilled from 12 of the brand’s best-loved shower gels, shampoos, conditioners and hand washes. And, when you run out of lather, you just need to bring back the cleaned bottle, ready to be refilled. Reusing your packaging really is that simple. Seemingly small acts can lead to big change.
Sustainable store fixtures: With this new concept, The Body Shop is going back to its roots and continues its passion of being forward thinking and environmentally progressive. The store has been outfitted with sustainable fixtures made from reclaimed wood and recycled plastics to help minimize its environmental footprint. Examples include a metal facade constructed in aluminium, which requires less energy production than other materials and is infinitely recyclable. The store also boasts worktop surfaces that are manufactured from 100% recycled material otherwise destined for the landfill.
The Body Butter Tower: One the most beloved The Body Shop products, The Body Shop body butters are displayed in full glory in a towering rack. With an attached sink, customers can test out different hand washes and shower gels before slathering on their favourite body butter or body lotion at this testing station.
Gifting Station: Thanks to the gifting station, there are endless ways to make the perfect present as special as your special someone. Get creative and personalize gifts with stamps, ribbons and recyclable paper to treat your loved ones to something truly unique. You can even personalize your refillable bottle with stickers from the gifting station!
More Loved Products: Pick up The Body Shop’s most-loved products from the bestsellers’ bays, featuring an edit of head-to-toe heroes loved by customers around the world. Single ingredients -many of them sourced through the brand’s Community Fair Trade programme – include Tea Tree, Charcoal and Hemp, which have become favourites for their hardworking formulas. The Body Shop’s friendly staff is on-hand to offer demonstrations, tailored tips and new ways to experience these iconic products.
Return. Recycle. Repeat: This store will allow customers to easily recycle their beauty product packaging. Tell the workshop staff if you want to return and recycle any of The Body Shop’s empty bottles, tubs, tubes and pots. Next, put your empty packaging in the bin so that The Sea Monkey Project can recycle and repurpose it. Next time you visit, recycle again! Simple! Your planet is sending big love your way.
The ACT Wall/Station: This is where the public can pledge to do something sustainable for the good of the environment, while also inspiring and encouraging others. Choose from one of four pledges on the board to commit to:
- To switch to energy-efficient appliances, reduce energy and your bills, too
- To consume less, waste less, and enjoy life more
- To reduce, reuse, repair and recycle as much as possible
- To green your commute, perhaps by riding a bike, carpooling, driving an electric vehicle or flying less
In future, this ACT wall will be used to activate causes that are inline with the values of The Body Shop, including youth activism and female empowerment.
During the launch, members of the public were treated to 350 free plants from The Free Tree Society to bring home. Meanwhile, until 1 May 2022, local artisans will set up pop-up booths at the activity area in the Water Feature Area, where shoppers can check out their wares for purchase. Each artisan has pledged to donate a portion of their sales to selected NGOs and causes, including MyCat, Women’s Aid Organisation, Agape Vision, MyHutan and Save Our Seahorses. Artisans taking part in Artisans For A Cause include The Sea Monkey Project, Earth Heir, Concrete Dezign, Dheneshmakes, Theory 13, Tattme.not, as well as Aquaria, which will showcase live seahorses to educate the public about these unique sea creatures – bringing the concept of Earth Day and activist makers full circle for the event.
The new Sunway Pyramid store showcases the best of The Body Shop’s brand values. It marks a return to The Body Shop’s activism roots, as they want their customers to roll up their sleeves and join them in playing with products and campaigning for issues that progress equality.
