We’ve featured her here previously, and for good reasons. To date, Zee Avi is one of Malaysia’s most successful international recording artistes of recent times. And she’s just about to return to our shores for an exclusive three date national tour (Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kuching), in conjunction with the release of her sophomore album, “Ghostbird”.
Her new album release showcases the maturity of her music and her comfort as an established performer. For 25-year-old Malaysian singer-songwriter Zee Avi, “Swell Window” is the track that started the journey and incidentally, it’s also the opening track of “Ghostbird”.
“It’s a song about seizing the moment,” she says, “and for me, a new direction and a new voice came and stayed.”
You know what they say, that literal overnight success can easily poison young minds. But Zee is no ordinary mind — while critics compared her chilled-out, jazzy, ukulele-based songs to Billie Holiday and Cat Power, she continued to make visual art and remained her buoyant, whimsical self:
After the album arrival on the 30th of August 2011, Zee is itching to get back on tour and show off her live skills. “I want people to feel like they’re being hugged,” she says of the soothingly beautiful album. “I think this is my swell window right now.”
And “swell window”, it is. So, Zee Avi fans and whimsical music lovers, here’s your chance to catch the singer-songwriter live on her “Homecoming Tour” next month! Follow her to one of the below special dates for a night you will never forget.
