Yay to holidays! But what about Lucky?

Another year is coming to an end and tis the season to be a tourist, tralalalalala lalala (yes we know you count, you anal people!). While our pets or furkids provide us companionship in our everyday lives, there will come a time where we will have to leave them behind to travel be it for business or pleasure.

You may be tempted to bring them together but travel costs for pets can be pricey and not all hotels are willing to accomodate pets. All the long hours and new environment can also be stressful for your pet furry friend. Unless you have neighbours, family or close friends who can pop by everyday to feed and care your pet, here are some helpful tips that will ensure both you and your little one deal with each other’s absence a little better.

If you don’t want your pet accessing any rooms they shouldn’t be in, keep it shut or put up pet gates. Don’t close all the windows to block them from getting out because unless your place is well ventilated it can make the place stuffy. Use magnetic framed netting on your windows to make sure there’s always fresh air available in your home.

Brief your friend or family member who has volunteered to care for your pet while you’re away. Show her how much food and water to leave out, when to walk your dog or clean your cat’s litterbox. Don’t forget their little quirks!

If you opt to use an auto feeder, make sure you test to see it works for a week before you jet off. You don’t want your feeder to malfunction two hours after you’re gone leaving your pet with no food for the rest of the week. Also with you there while the auto feeder is in operation, its easier to coax your pet to eat from it.

This goes without saying that you should pet-proof your place holiday or no holiday. Make sure your furniture and plants are safe for your pets and keep away sharp objects like knives, blades or . Don’t leave around food even if they’re in packets because well, guess what claws are for?

Leave plenty of toys to distract your pets with. They’re sure to be bored without someone to play with plus it keeps them from scratching the carpet or biting your favourite shoes!

Lastly, make sure you leave your pets with clean bedding and cushions before heading off. That way it won’t smell so bad by the time you return home. It may all seem like a lot of work and it may be hard for most people to leave their pets at home and not worry about them but by following these little tips, it’ll make the separation easier for you and little Lucky!
