Whether your child is just starting out at kindergarten or primary school, there are some preparations to be made – mentally, physically and emotionally- to guide them into the first steps of schooling. Making a checklist of stationery is a good idea but there are intangible ways to make your child feel like a student and be prepared to face the joys and challenges of schooling.
1. Schedule the wakeup and bedtime
Most children are not used to wake up at the break of dawn because of staying up late and sleeping in. By setting up a time for them to sleep early and waking them up according to the school times about two weeks before school starts will benefit them greatly.
2. Pep talk your child.
Start by giving your child a positive outlook about school. Children get nervous easily when they do no know what is ahead of them. Tell them about the prospects of meeting new friends and teachers as well as learning exciting new things.
3. Familiarize your child with school
Accompany your child on the first day of school. Bring him/her around to get accustomed to the new surroundings, meet the people in charge, play at the playground/field and make your child feel comfortable.
4. Set realistic goals
Doing well in school does not necessarily mean getting good grades. Assess your child’s capability and help him/her make goals such as asking questions in class, paying attention in class, making friends and managing good behaviour. By laying down the foundation for a good education, your child will adapt to the learning curve easily in the long run.
5.Learning at home
Education does not stop at school only. You can teach your child basic math, cultivate reading habits and playing educational board games to broaden your child’s thinking. Turn off the television and video games and enjoy family time together just learning about new things.
