The 2013 World Happiness Report ranks the happiest countries around the globe, and Malaysia came in 56th place out of 156 countries.
According to a recent survey by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, a majority of the happiest people in the world reside in northern Europe.
Released just this week, the happiest people apparently reside in northern Europe. Denmark, Norway, Switzerland earned the top three spots, Australia, came in 10th.
Some of the variables that counted the country’s levels of happiness were explained by healthy expectancies, social support, freedom to make choices and even perceptions of corruption.
The 2013 World Happiness Report includes more detailed analysis in a bid to guide policymakers to take the well-being of citizens into account when making decisions.
“There is now a rising worldwide demand that policy be more closely aligned with what really matters to people as they themselves characterize their well-being,” said Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of Columbia University’s Earth Institute.
“More and more world leaders are talking about the importance of well-being as a guide for their nations and the world. The World Happiness Report 2013 offers rich evidence that the systematic measurement and analysis of happiness can teach us a lot about ways to improve the world’s well-being and sustainable development.” [Source]
