How To: Dress for the Office

What are the boundaries of dressing when it comes to the office? During work hours, it’s advisable that you don’t take the saying, “If you have it, flaunt it,” too seriously. The workplace dress code can be pretty ambiguous these days like when is it acceptable to wear colors and printed skirts? Do leopard prints fit in at the office or should one hide her spots?

To put it simply, there is no guideline that clearly fits for every job. You need to develop your own guideline by assessing the nature of your profession, check out what you other colleagues are wearing and try not to go berserk with color blocking!

If you’re looking to give a good impression and a career advancement, then you want to look professional and competent regardless of whaetver position you’re in. Like it or not, the styles, colors and lengths of your skirt will speak volumes about your ability to do your job. Sometimes, looking cute and trendy can give your bosses an impression that you’re all fluff. You know, like a little bunny. Everyone goes, awww, but nobody’s gonna treat it seriously.

In general, the more distracting a piece of clothing or jewelry is, the less appropriate it is for office wear.

Here are some dos and don’t when it comes to corporate wear:

  • Color blocking may be attractive but traditional career colors include red (aggressive), navy (trustworthy), gray (conservative) and black (chic). You should use one of these colors together with other softer pastel shades such as pink, blue or lilac.
  • Long necklaces and dangly earrings can stylish but they’re also very distracting. Save them for the weekends and go for stud earrings instead.
  • Hobo style bags are named such for a reason. Go for structured bags  with firm handles that can fit your folders and laptops.
  • Good clothes and accessories alone are not enough if your nails are chipped and your hair is messy.
  • Wear clothes that fit well. Clothing made for the mass market in stores may not fit everyone so invest in tailored blazers, pants and tops if possible. They should be comfortable to wear while sitting and walking as well.
Here are some work appropriate pieces we at Lipstiq will recommend you to wear that are both classy and sophisticated at the same time:

Clockwise (from left): Kate Middleton Reiss Inspired Dress from The Attires Attic (RM55), Fuchsia Matte Satin Blouse With Scoop from Whitesoot (RM53), Duo Tone Collar Top from Dovey Lovey (RM49), High Waisted Slacks from Oh Daisies(RM70), Eccentric flare from Pumpkin (RM65), The Office from Cocktails (RM59) and Houndstooth Woven Jacket from Azorias (RM189).

Left to right: Rida from Milktee (RM53) and Bow Midi Skirt from 6th Sense (RM53).

Left to right: Shoulder Structure Top from Banana Mustard (RM49) and Sleeveless Button Down Top by Angel Glory (RM43)

Clockwise from left:  Penelope Satchel RM69, Envelope Clutch RM44 and Lola 3 Way Bag RM62, all from Unmasqued Bags.

Set aside a small budget every few months to update your wardrobe. Start off with basic pieces and spend more on comfortable shoes, a sturdy bag and a blazer. You should also spend equal attention on your makeup and hair if we might add!
