American fashion designer Kate Spade of her world renowned eponymous brand died by suicide on June 5th and everyone including celebrities as well as trailblazers of the fashion industry continue to mourn.

While they may not have known the designer themselves, many women are beginning to reminisce about the time they received their first Kate Spade bag on Twitter and it’s so very touching.

Beyond the timeless elegance of Kate Spade bags, especially its archetypal Sam bag, these accounts attest for the legacy of Kate Spade’s empire from when she established the brand in 1993 and that the brand’s influence on women was way more than just handbags.

My grandmother gave me my first Kate Spade bag when I was in college. I still have it. Holding Kate’s family, friends and loved ones in my heart.

Age 13 with a little Kate Spade purse and a Wet Seal dress, you couldn’t touch me. What sad sad news.

Kate Spade was a legendary designer and as a young woman I always despised the idea of owning a purse until she alone showed me how it could be powerful. She embodied the modern woman. RIP Kate Spade 🎀@katespadeny

I have vivid memories of walking the nordstroms bag department when I was young with mom, and being enamored by the boxy mordern bags with the little black Kate Spade woven label. Her work then in part inspired me to get where I am today. What a an immense talent to loose.

I remember in senior year of high school I saved up for months to buy myself a kate spade wallet. I remember feeling so mature and sophisticated, like I was finally ready to take on the world.

The first gift my husband ever gave me was a Kate Spade bag that I had been coveting. I’ve always been drawn to the whimsy and fun culture of the brand. Another reminder that the light does not exist without an equal amount of dark. 💔

My first “designer” bag was Kate Spade… flash forward 18 years and it’s the brand I️ chose for my bridal party. My heart is saddened by the news of Kate Spade’s passing. Such a strong women who paved the way for so many. #RIPKateSpade ♠️

I remember my mom bought me my first Kate Spade bag. A few years later I handed it down to my twin sister & now she wears it everyday to work #rememberingkatespade 💔

I really am so sad about Kate Spade. Her designs have been symbols of confidence and independence for so many women. I bought the 25th Anniversary Sam purse last month as a 25th birthday present for myself. Rest In Peace, Kate ♠️ pic.twitter.com/mzYPeD3l6H

The first thing I ever saved up for when I got my first job was a Kate Spade wallet that I hid until I could afford at TJ Maxx. Hearing about her suicide was tough today. Check on your friends man. You really never know what someone can be going through behind closed doors.

I cannot put into words how excited I was when I got my first Kate Spade purse, but I also I cannot put into words how sad I am that we’ve lost an amazing designer. She brought joy through her designs and is every girl’s milestone when they receive such a purse. You’ll be missed. pic.twitter.com/loL5HmjWmr

My first “grown-up” designer handbag was a Kate Spade tote. Carrying one of her handbags always gave me so much confidence. She taught me how to be proud of the woman I am, and I can’t thank her enough. May she rest in peace. ✨✨✨ https://t.co/Ek9f1mOngn
